Tunnel connecting Europe and America?

Russia has ambitious plans of building a tunnel under the Bering Strait connecting its far east landmass with Alaska. The 64 mile tunnel, not unlike the English Chunnel connecting England and France, could stimulate freight traffic and aid in supply of oil, gas and electricity from Siberia to the US and Canada. The mega project could cost a whopping $65 billion and could take a decade for completion.

Sounds far-fetched with no news about this from the US side.

Floating Nuclear Power Plant

The world's first floating nuclear power plant will be commissioned in 2011 in Russia's Arctic. Russia started building this in April this year and hopes to market it to other countries too.The power plants are expected to be widely used in remote regions with power shortfalls, and also in the implementation of projects requiring stand-alone and uninterrupted electricity supplies in the absence of a developed power grid.

Each such unit can provide electrical energy that is enough for a city with a population of 200,000 people.

Wall Street Journal had put up a video in its site which is a promotional ad for the sale of such nuclear plants by a former vodka salesman from Russia who says he spent six years in prison! The stuff they sell these days!

Father of all bombs!

An environmental-friendly bomb!

Russia today tested the world's most powerful thermobaric bomb, popularly known as vacuum bomb. Dubbed by the Russian military as the 'father of all bombs'(sic), it is four times more powerful and the temperature at the epicenter of its blast is two times higher than the American Massive Ordinance Air Blast bomb - MOAB, also known under its name 'Mother of All Bombs.'

According to Russian reports, the bomb has no match in the world and does not contradict a single international treaty. The main destruction is inflicted by an ultrasonic shockwave and an incredibly high temperature.

Such devices generally detonate in two stages. First a small blast disperses a main load of explosive material into a cloud, which then either spontaneously ignites in air or is set off by a second charge.

Next to come: Grandmother or Grandfather of all bombs??

Russian steals a bridge!

Russians are ingenious. Even their thieves are a class apart. A thief was apprehended for stealing a bridge!Unbelievable!

A five-meter metal bridge over the Yaroslavka River was stolen, but the thief was successfully traced following a manhunt.Investigators said the 45-year-old suspect is believed to have dislocated the bridge in the region's Shilovo District and carried it away using a vehicle owned by the utilities company he works for. He then sawed it up, and intended to sell it to a scrap yard.

Putin flexes his muscles!

Russian Prez Vladimir Putin stripped off his shirt for the cameras while on holiday with Prince Albert II of Monaco in the Siberian mountains last week.

Popular Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda on Wednesday published a huge color photo of their barechested president with the headline: "Be Like Putin." Also published is a guide showing exactly what exercises were required to build up abs like that of the Russian leader!

Female admirers,Russian gay chat rooms and blogs were particularly intrigued by the photos of the Presidential torso ...

Canada pooh-poohs Russian Arctic Claims

Okay! Now we are seeing some muscle flexing. Canadian Foreign Minister says "This isn't the 15th century. You can't go around the world and just plant flags and say 'We're claiming this territory'." Exactly! Please dont sit quiet letting the Kremlin do as they please.

Canada's Conservative government is vowing to assert sovereignty over its Arctic lands and waterways. Last month Ottawa said it would build up to eight patrol ships designed to operate in the frozen region, which is believed to hold huge untapped oil and gas reserves.

Russia to plant its flag in the North Pole Seabelt

Image coutesy:GlobalresearchThis is an update to my previous article on how Russia is claiming a huge swathe of the polar region as part of its territorial extension as they are asserting that the underwater geological feature called the Lomonosov Ridge is an extension of the Siberian continental shelf.Click on the image to see it in better resolution.

Their earlier claims in 2001 had been nixed by the UN before. However,a team of explorers plan to descend 4,300 metres down to the seabed in a miniature submarine to stake Russia’s claim to this Arctic belt-the combined size of Germany, France and Italy-and plant a one-metre Russian flag, made of titanium.
With four other countries(Canada, the United States, Norway and Denmark)laying claim to the Arctic shelf, this deep seated drive towards imperialism may only lead to more conflict in a resource constrained world. With this move, Russia is sending a clear signal to world powers that it has shrugged off its post-cold war weakness.

AK-47 turns 60!

One of Russia’s most popular exports has been the Kalashnikov rifle invented by Mikhail Kalashnikov 60 years back and popularly known as AK-47.The weapon invented to defend the then Soviet Union has become a symbol of Third World revolutionary struggle and Islamic jihad.Ironically,it is at the top of the list of Top 10 combat rifles of the US Military.
The original Kalashnikov underwent some changes and a lot of knockoffs appeared in the market. This has enraged the Kremlin. With over 75 million built worldwide, it is a firearms legend that has probably inflicted more lethal results than any other single weapon system ever produced. It is popular because its cheap to produce, easy to maintain and immune to extremities of climate unlike other guns.
Three years ago, in celebration of Mikhail Kalashnikov's 85th birthday, a museum was opened in the Russian city of Izhevsk to honor his most enduring gift to the world.Plans are afoot to build a hotel in an artificial island in the Izhevsk city which will be designed in the shape of a Kalashnikov!

Dial 'P' for Vladimir Putin

Vladimir PutinPost 1991, Russia has seen a lot of changes. Before President Vladimir Putin took over power in December 1999, the Russian eonomy was in shambles with increased government debt, currency crisis and insolvent banking system. With the help of rising energy prices, and by courting foreign investments and offering lucrative joint ventures, Putin managed to restore the country to financial health by paying debts and building up hard currency reserves that have now grown to $300 billion.
More importantly, he reined in the power of the Yeltsin-era oligarchs by intimidation. The not-so subservient ones were either exiled to Siberia, immigrated to European nations or have died under mysterious circumstances.

The bigger threat now is Putin's government is reasserting direct government ownership and control over an ever-widening share of the economy by establishing vast state-owned holding companies in automobile and aircraft manufacturing, shipbuilding, nuclear power, diamonds, titanium and other industries justifying it as being in national interest.
Russia's old oligarchs have now been replaced with a new political-economic oligarchy made up of officials and executives friendly with, or beholden to, Putin. They've already tightened their grip on key energy, metals and natural resources sectors, and begun to branch out into finance, real estate, telecommunications and even auto parts.
Recently, Russian oligarch Mikhail Prokhorov, owner of the biggest Nickel corporation, Norilsk Nickel( the largest mining and metals company in Russia and the world's largest producer of nickel and palladium)went out favor with Putin and his share is to be bought out by his partner,Potanin, who is admittedly close to Putin.

In Russia today, no serious deal can be made without approval from the Kremlin. It is increasingly becoming a police state with Putin pulling all the strings.Clearly,in neo-Soviet Russia, the government uses business as a smokescreen to do exactly what the USSR government did openly.

Russia into Land 'Addition'

Is the Russian Federation out to grab the Arctic landmass?
The Arctic North Pole is not owned by any country.Russians are now laying claim to the Lomonosov ridge whose bed is filled with tons of natural gas and oil.
How is such a claim possible? They are doing so by claiming that the structure of the continental shelf is similar to the geological structure within its territory.

The shelf is 200 meters deep and oil and gas would be easy to extract, especially with ice melting because of global warming.

Russia has the world's largest gas reserves. It is the second largest exporter of oil after Saudi Arabia. The Kremlin is keen to secure Russia's long-term hegemony over global energy markets, and to find new sources of fuel.
